Discussion:
Yamaha CS1x receive bulk dump

I've just picked up a secondhand CS1x, and downloaded the Blue Book
advanced user guide and sample files.

If I understand the guide correctly, I need to use the Utility menu to
enter "Bulk Dump" mode, then just send a sysex file from my PC. While
the file is being received by the synth the display should show "Receiving".

Now I can save bulk dump data from synth to PC, but if I try to load the
tutorial files that accompany the blue book the sending application on
the PC (tried MIDI-OX and Sysex95) appears to have sent the data
correctly but the display on the synth never changes and no data appears
to have been loaded.

Any ideas what's going wrong?

There is no need to enter bulk dump mode. Actually that might be
exactly what is messing things up. Try sending to the synth while it is
in performance mode.

Thanks Björn, that was the problem. I can send back a dump file that I
saved from the synth and see the "receiving" message on the display.

This is a long shot maybe, but I'm still unable to load the Blue Book
demo files. There is no "receiving" message and the synth configuration
doesn't seem to have changed after loading any of the tutorial files.
Only thing I can think of is that something has damaged the files like a
byte ordering issue as I downloaded them in a zip including the Blue
Book PDFs.

Thanks again.

Do you have the SysEx or the MIDI version of the demo files?

Oh, and by the way, good call to go through the Blue Book. I wish every
synthesiser had a manual like that.

The MIDI version - all of the files in the archive have a .mid extension. Do
I need to do something differently with these?

Yes, I'm really impressed. It was one of the reasons I went for the CS1x as
I'm a newbie to synths and the world of MIDI (as you can probably tell ;-)

Thanks,
Ian

Just playing them with your sequencer should be fine. Can you play a
MIDI song to the CS1x and hear it correctly? Then this should work
too. Just make sure the sequencer is set to transmit SysEx in the songs.

OK I understand now. I was sending them as SysEx using MIDI-OX.

I've downloaded a demo of XGWorks so I'll get it installed and try loading
the files with that when I get home this evening.

Thanks once again :-)

XGWorks won't run on my system, but I downloaded a shareware sequence
called Jazzware that supports SysEx or so the help file claims. This
time the display on the synth shows that it is receiving data from the
tutorpfm.mid file.

I'm probably being incredibly dense here but I don't understand how to
access the performances that I have just sent to the synth. The blue
book says to use the "Performance Tutorial Bank", voices "TP001" and
upwards. I have selected Performance on the synth and pressed the User
button but all of the presets in banks PRE0 to PRE12 seem to be the same
as the factory defaults - I certainly can't find the tutorial presets.

Ignore me, I was being dense ;-)

Found them now, and busy experimenting!
